    Afraid of the Dark

    (Randy Robbins)
I wrote and recorded this song in July of 2006. It features me on rhythm guitar, a harmonica, lead vocal, and a little shaker.
I used to be afraid of the dark
I used to play with fire for the spark
Now I need to turn the lights out just to sleep
Now I need to play for real and play for keeps

I used to be afraid I'm insane
I used to never know this kind of pain
Now as I look out all I see are soulless faces
As they travel on their way to distant places

    I'm alone in this world
    Can't find a soul and I don't think
I can take this pain anymore
    Anymore...

I used to think that love was just a game
I used to think that you all felt the same
Now I need for you to give me a clear sign
Now I need to feel your heartbeat next to mine.

    Holiday

    Randy Robbins
I wrote this song in August 2007. I recorded a few different versions of it... A couple were just other solo acoustic renditions, much like this one, but others had multiple guitar and vocal overdubs. But I felt this solo acoustic version that I recorded in October 2008 really ended up capturing what I feel the song is.
    Come
    Wake me up
    Take me home
I don't need to sleep no more
    Set me off
    Turn me loose
Keep your feet up on the floor
    I says "I'm going crazy"
She says "I don't know what to say."
    "Say, 'Come take me away
    For a holiday.'"

    Go
    Take a walk
    What's the rush?
You don't need me to complain
    You and them
    Them and us
    Light a candle
    Watch the flame
I says, "I know your reasons."
She says, "I don't know how to play.
    But, come take me away
    For a holiday."

    Reality Check

I wrote and recorded this song in May 2007. It was a fun recording to do, and it all came together very naturally in just a couple of hours. I recorded the main rhythm and vocal tracks live as take 1. And I overdubbed the little lead licks and a second rhythm guitar, and added a second vocal that I only bled in periodically over the chorus for a nice effect. And there's also very little, if any, reverb on any of the vocal or guitar tracks for a nice clean feel... One of my favorites.
I was searching for this ordinary scene
I was chasin' shadows, diving in between
I couldn't understand the voices in my dreams

    But, oh, she'd say
    I was on my own
She was with me those days
But I was on my own
    Through that looking glass
I've been starin' at it so intently
Just to see why you would send me

Off a-wanderin' 'bout this ordinary scene
You can visualize the places that I've seen
And if you take my hand we'll walk into a dream
And you could roll your eyes and bring me to reality

    But, oh, she'd say
    I was on my own
She was with me those days
But I was on my own
    Through that looking glass
I've been starin' at it so intently
Just to see why you would send me

Off a-wanderin' 'bout this ordinary scene
You can visualize the places that I've seen
And I could listen for your footsteps in my dreams
And I could help you find the fun in the obscene
And if you take my hand we'll walk the desert stream
And you could roll your eyes and bring me to reality

    Mirage

This is another solo acoustic song. I wrote this sometime in 2001, I think... It took me a good two or three years to figure out how to play it though... I recorded it in July 2005 in a marathon recording session while I was recording several other songs. Most of those songs were covers, and are sitting on my hard drive somewhere, but this one is the best original I recorded at the time.
All those years you were so close to me
I thought I knew who you were supposed to be
But now I'm not so sure
But I'm one step closer to the door
And now with my eyes closed
I can finally see what you've become to me

    You are an illusion
    Part of my confusion
    You were never fully realized
And the danger that was in your eyes is gone

You were a threat to me with your injured soul
Your sweet young body; it's just left me cold
You turned me back to front
And you took from me all I could want
And your mirage has me in a stranglehold
    I'm losing all control

    You are an illusion
    Part of my confusion
    You were never fully realized
And the danger that was in your eyes is gone

    You are an illusion
    Part of my confusion
    You were never fully realized
And the danger that was in your eyes is gone
    Gone, gone...

    Oh Well

    (Randy Robbins)

    Randy Robbins
I wrote and recorded this in late 2004. It was another simple recording. I played rhythm and sang at the same time, then overdubbed a second rhythm track, and then a second vocal. Another one of my favorites...
    Oh well
    Ring that old church bell
    Tell me no more lies
    Keep me satisfied

    No way
    There's nothing left to say
    And nothing left to do
My mind is stuck on you

I spent a little time with Angeline
Where the water flows freely through the mountain streams
And the stars fade in the shade of the old oak trees

But I was dreamin' of a night in New Orleans
Where the sky's still filled with broken dreams
And the sun could never seem to shine it's light on me
    But oh well

    Oh well
I ain't got shit to sell
Just a penny in a wishing well
And an ocean in an empty shell

    No way
Here comes a brand new day
But my friends have all gone their way
    No one wanted to stay

Angelina took me with her to Chicago
Where the darkness hides 'neath the moon's soft glow
Love songs don't make sense no more

But I was dreamin' of a city in the Philippines
Where the women are dirty but the streets are clean
Nothing ever changes in a place I've never seen

    But oh well
    Ring that rusted bell
    Tell me where to go
I swear this time I'll show

Waiting For The Sun To Shine

    (Randy Robbins)
    2009-02-09
    Randy Robbins
I wrote and recorded this song on a dark foggy day in March '08. Just a solo acoustic version... one take, one mic on the pc.
    Sunday morning comin'
    Lyin' in bed
    And I have clouds formin'
    In my head
    Everybody's prayin'
    For something strong
But all I heard was thunder stormin'
    All night long

I'm just waiting for the sun to shine
Once the morning fog has gone
I'm just waiting for the sun to shine
    So I can carry on

I see visions of the summer sun
    People laughin', swimmin', havin' fun
Nobody knows what's hiding behind my door
Nobody has the answers I'm looking for

I'm just waiting for the sun to shine
Once the morning fog has gone
I'm just waiting for the sun to shine
    Trade my dusk for dawn

You could come to me and call my name
I think you should know by now that I'm glad you came
I want you open your eyes babe
    Crack your smile
I want you to stay with me babe
    For a while

We're can wait here for the sun to shine
Once the morning fog has gone
We're just waiting for the sun to shine
    Trade our dusk for dawn
We're just waiting for the sun to shine
    So we can carry on

    Drown

    (Randy Robbins)

This is a song that wrote in December '07 that I had forgotten until about September '08. This recording was made in the SkyBuck Pub in October '08 with Buck Weir on bongos/handdrums, and Erron Geer on harmonica, and me on vocal and rhythm guitar. I overdubbed a double tracked vocal, and a bit of piano, and a little shaker...
    Hear the rain falling
    Keep my thoughts under control
It was all a frame of time
In the darkness I couldn't satisfy my soul

    Follow me down
    There's a river I may drown
    Follow me down
Though your shiv'rin' I'll be waiting for you

    Bring you comfort and
Bring you warmth for your cold
It was all a state of mind
In the darkness you'll never satisfy your soul

    Follow me down
In the river I may drown
    Follow me down
Though your shiv'rin' I've been waiting for you

    All those visions of
    All those fancy gypsy clothes
It was all a space in time
Still the darkness has never satisfied my soul

    Follow me down
To the river I may drown
    Follow me down
Though I'm shiv'rin' I've been waiting for you

    Feel the rain fallin'
Let the water take its toll
Feel it weighing on your mind
    Hear the stars callin'
Feel the cleansing of your soul

    Follow me down
    There's a river I may drown
    Follow me down
Though your shiv'rin' I've been waiting for you

    Follow me down
    There's a river I may drown
    Follow me down
Though your shiv'rin' I've been waiting for you

    I Know

This was another song that I wrote in 2000-2001 sometime, that also took me years to figure out how to record it. It took a rewrite most of the lyrics to get me to put it down in March 2007. There's a double tracked vocal, double tracked guitar, etc. What was cool about recording this song was how it sort of felt like a sound painting. It was a lot of fun to record.
Here I sit and stare into a darkened light
I still don't know the difference between wrong and right
I don't recall what I was doing there that night
But I know what I know

To common folk she read her books of Indian lore
Her lyin' eyes had kept them coming back for more
Stories of love as it was taught some years before
She came to know what she knows

The lizard king from out on high he watched her dance
We sang our songs to veil our desolate romance
The fuedal lord came jousting through his daggered lance
For his change to show what he knows

She dragged me of unto our waterfall chateau
A word of truth in every story that she told
The hands of time only move faster as grow old

The cryptic handwriting that was red up on the wall
You tried to reach for it but you know you're not that tall
If you wanna reach that high then teach me how to crawl
Cause I don't know what you know

    Say What You Say

I wrote and recorded this song in May 2007. I recorded this a few minutes after I had written it. I've recorded other versions, with overdubs, and some cool live versions, but for the cd, I felt this version served the song best.
If I was looking for someone special
If I was looking for someone new
I didn't know you were something special
I didn't know what you came to do

But who knows the games to play
    And who knows the disarray
And who else could lead the way
To hear you say what you say

I'm looking out on a lake of fire
I'm staring into a ball of flames
I close my eyes as the flames grow higher
I try to scream but it's all in vain

But who knows what's won or lost
And who knows the lines to cross
And who else could lead the way
To hear you say what you say

I'm looking out on a grazing pasture
I'm staring on to a grassy knoll
I see the pictures are moving faster
I see the sun and it's growing cold

    Angel By My Side

    (Randy Robbins)

    Randy Robbins
I wrote and recorded this song sometime in early 2005. Another easy recording, lots of overdubs, lotsa echo, sounds like a bit of a dream, cloudy and whatnot.
I dreamed I was a soldier fighting in an unwanted war
I knew the war was over when I knocked upon your door
I thought you were an angel sent to me from the Lord above
I knew I was in danger, drowning in your sea of love

You're a fire flower sprouting upwards from the earth
I will be the soil that helps you grow to all your worth
I am but a dreamer looking for some peace of mind
You, you are an angel, sugar sweet, and soft as wine

Speak to me softly; I know I don't have much to say
I remain in hiding as to not scare you away
I know I'm not angel; I only have this life to live
But as sure as the sun will set tonight in time you'll have
    All I have to give

You're a fire flower sprouting upwards towards the sun
I will be your guiding light when all is said and done
I am but a dreamer looking for a place to hide
You, you are an angel with a dreamer by your side

    Faith In You

    (Randy Robbins)
    2009-02-09
    Randy Robbins
Another simple song, simple recording. I wrote this sometime in 2004 for my sister, Kristie, to sing, but she never got around to singing it. It's simple, just one verse, and the chorus repeated a few times. I like the key change, simplistic as it may be, into and out of the last chorus.
She was looking for a cool conversation
I just happened to be in line
And you just had to make a sly observation
Like you do almost all the time
But darling, you have nothing to fear

Cause no one's ever gonna come and take me away
Cause there's nothing anyone could say
Nothing's ever gonna come between me and you
Cause there's nothing anyone could do
That could sway the faith that I have in you

    Shades of Red

    (Randy Robbins)
I wrote and recorded this song in September 2008. It features me on rhythm guitar, lead vocal, and doing some background vocals and harmonies on the coda. Kate Yack added her vocals to the coda as well. All percussion (bongos/hand-drums, cymbals, etc) was handled by a fantastic drummer and a good friend, Buck Weir.
I went for a walk last night into a peaceful place
I wandered by a stream and knelt to wash my dirty face
The water came from far beyond the realms of time and space
I touched the water to my lips and listened to it say
I hope you find your way
I thought I heard it say

So I pushed on further trying not to understand
I came unto a house attached unto a rubber band
The windows were unguarded so I reached in with my hand
I felt the coolness of the breeze and vanished into sand
    I vanished into sand
    Into the Master's hands

When I had returned I felt a different shade of red
I listened for my heart beating beside my aching head
I realized that I was free to roam the country side
And so I say to you, my friend,
There is no place to hide
    You've everything inside
    Forever bye and bye...

    Katie

This is for my baby... Just one mic, one take. It's a nice little folky tune with a real nice melody, and I like singing the chorus... Nice laid back way to close out the album...
    In the morning I rise
I see the world as our disguise
All the things that you do
I want to do them with you

    Katie
    Say your good-bye's to yesterday
    Katie
    This doesn't happen everyday

You wanna swim at the beach
Won't let you slip out of reach
    On a blanket we'll lie
And let the sun shine through our eyes

    Katie
The future's waiting day by day
    Katie
    Nobody's watching us today

Close the door; shut the blinds
That lazy sun don't need to shine
You hold a light within you
It's there to get you through

    Katie
As I lay me down to sleep
    Katie
I pray the Lord you're mine to keep
